Where went the 9 wealthiest people in the world in 1923?

In 1923, nine of the wealthiest people in the world met at Chicago's Edge Water Beach Hotel.
Their combined wealth, it is estimated, exceeded the wealth of the Government of the United States at that time. These men certainly knew how to make a living and accumulate wealth. Attending the meeting were the following men:
1. The president of the largest steel company,
2. The president of the largest utility company,
3. The president of the largest gas company,
4. The president of the New York Stock Exchange,
5. The president of the Bank of International Settlements,
6. The greatest wheat speculator,
7. The greatest bear on Wall Street,
8. The head of the World's greatest monopoly &
9. A member of President Harding's cabinet.
That's a pretty impressive line-up of people by anyone's yardstick.
Yet, 25 years later, where were those nine industrial giants?
Let’s examine what happened to them 25 years later.
1. The President of the then largest steel company (Bethlehem Steel Corp), Charles M Schwab, lived on borrowed capital for five years before he died bankrupt.
2. The President of the then largest gas company, Howard Hubson, went insane.
3. One of the greatest commodity traders (Wheat Speculator), Arthur Cutten, died insolvent.
4. The then President of the New York Stock Exchange, Richard Whitney, was sent to jail.
5. The member of the US President’s Cabinet (the member of President Harding's cabinet), Albert Fall, was pardoned from jail just to be able to go home and die in peace.
6. The greatest “bear” on Wall Street, Jesse Livermore committed suicide.
7. The President of the then world’s greatest monopoly, Ivar Krueger, committed suicide.
8. The President of the Bank of International Settlement, Leon Fraser, committed Suicide.
9. The president of the largest utility company, Samuel Insull, died penniless.
What they forgot was how to "make" life while they got busy making money!
Money in itself is not evil; it provides food for the hungry, medicine for the sick, clothes for the needy. Money is only a medium of exchange.
We need two kinds of education:
a) One that teaches us how to make a living,
b) One that teaches us how to live.
There are many of us who are so engrossed in our professional life that we neglect our family, health and social responsibilities.
If asked why we do this, we would reply that "We are doing it for our family".
Yet, our kids are sleeping when we leave home. They are sleeping when we come back home!! Twenty years later, we’ll turn back, and they’ll all be gone, to pursue their own dreams and their own lives.
Without water, a ship cannot move. The ship needs water, but if the water gets into the ship, the ship will face existential problems. What was once a means of living for the ship will now become a means of destruction.
Similarly we live in a time where earning is a necessity but let not the earning enter our hearts, for what was once a means of living will surely become a means of destruction for us as well.
So take a moment and ask yourself, "Has the water entered my ship?"
I hope not!
Hope the above story will drive all of us in a better direction in 2016.

Many Nigerians are complaining about the constant fall in the value of the Naira and they blame the Government.
But is the government really to blame? In truth, our insatiable appetite for all things foreign is to blame.
I always fly Arik Business Class whenever I am traveling abroad except Arik does not fly on that route.
Not only is an Arik ticket a fraction of the cost of a British Airways ticket, but the money I pay to Arik circulates in Nigeria and helps firm up the Naira’s value.
As I speak to you today, a British Airways Business to London is ₦2,103,666 while Arik Business is ₦551,545 yet our elite still fly BA
But though Arik offers an affordable alternative to British Airways and other foreign airlines, our big men prefer to pay double what Arik charges to BA and other foreign airlines for the same services and yet they complain about the value of the Naira.
I have Nasco cornflakes and I have eaten Kellogs cornflakes. In terms of nutrition and taste they are almost indistinguishable. Yet our elite who will rather eat Kellogs than Nasco cornflakes, wonder why the Naira is falling!
Even something like Quaker Oats can be substituted with corn meal known locally as pap.
Obasanjo Farms of Nigeria and other large scale poultry farms have the capacity to provide chicken for the entire nation. Since that is the case, why are we even buying imported chicken?
In fact what is wrong if every family in Nigeria has a poultry in their backyard to give them eggs and meat?
My steward went to Makoko, which is one of the largest fishing communities in Lagos. He wanted to buy fish and they were selling imported frozen fish!
Yet in the very waters in front of them, there exist fresh fish that is more nutritious than the cheap frozen fish they were selling.
We keep spending over 1 Billion Naira importing rice when our own farmers are capable of meeting our national demand for rice. But for some reason, Nigerians just prefer to buy imported rice.
The imported rice we buy in Nigeria is not as good as our local rice because it has been stored for years in silos and treated with chemicals.
Moreover, every time you buy it, your money is going out of Nigeria to service an economy in Asia. The end result is that their currency gains value while ours loses value.
Have you ever wondered why European Premiership Clubs are so interested in Nigeria? It is because Nigerians spend billions traveling to Europe to watch their games, buy their merchandise and promote their leagues.
Yet, back at home, we would not be caught dead watching our own local league.
If we will not spend money on made in Nigeria goods and services, how can we expect our Naira to hold its value and appreciate?
Obviously we can not cut ourselves off from the world. No nation is an island, but at least we can fly Nigerian airlines, eat locally produced food and patronize our football league.
If we do this, not only will our economy grow and produce jobs for Nigerians, it will also make our goods and services improve in value such that they will be attractive enough to be imported.
I bought Innoson vehicles as official cars for my staff. I have never lived to regret it one day. They are comfortable and durable. But most of all, I know that my purchase helps to keep jobs in Nigeria and improve the value of the Naira.
I urge you to do the same. We have no other country but Nigeria and it is you and I that will make it what it is.
If we buy Naija We Will Grow Naira.

Zenith Bank still forging ahead

Zenith Bank forges ahead despite its harsh operating environment in Nigeria. Zennith bank is the third largest bank in Nigeria and it has an asset base after Ecobank and while First bank Nigeria remains the No.1 bank with massive potential for improved growth oweing to the banks governance and efficiency in operation.
Ever since 2010 audited report of the bank, Zenith bank has observed tremendous growth in every or almost all aspect of its business processes and also growing its gross earnings to a 4 years compounded annual growth of 20.31% and improving its profit after tax by an impressive 27.70% for a 4 year CAGR.

APC - THE BROOM PARTY may be in trouble

The broom revolution party in Nigeria, popularly referred to as APC might be in big trouble with these five facts. Recently, the party has been having hiccups in some areas which if not quickly attended to or addressed, could escalate beyond what the party can handle.

The ruling party, All Progressive Congress [ APC ] could be having difficult times than they have ever had before in history as the party has held on to power for about 12 months now after being the first opposition party in Nigeria to defeat the ruling party. However, all seem not to be well as the party has been facing serious call for the changes they promised the masses when campaigning for various political post across the federation. Not only is the fact that many Nigerians want to see an impromptu change , but also, some internal heat is really causing the party distress.

APC seem to be having a whole lot of challenges these days and the most common or prominent ones are ;

Tomatoe glut in Nigeria

Have you been to the market recently to price tomatoes or other related vegetables? Have you seen the quantity been sold at the market these days. It is no doubt that Nigeria is currently experiencing Tomato glut as tomatoes are just about everywhere and sellers are practically begging buyers to buy from them as the veggie' is a perishable good.
Tomatoes and many other vegetables and fruits gets destroyed season by season and year in year out. Up till this present moment, there has not been any board set up to mop up the excesses in the market and reduce the rate at which these perishable fruits get spoilt . There are many ways through which these vegetables can be preserved. We can adopt the canning technology or drying method  to preserve.

But by far and large, the government still has a lot of role to play when it comes to preservation of agricultural produce. Another major setback in the agricultural product is the prices of these goods. Many at times, when the goods or vegetables and fruits get in excesses at their season, their prices fall drastically. A case study is the sale of tomatoes currently and the quantity that is been sold. What we have currently now is twice cheaper and fresher than what we observed been sold during the dry season. The point here is simple, farmers are running at a loss and subsequently, the sellers because there is a limit to which an individual can consume or based on the consumption per family head.

There is urgent need for the government to put modernized methods of preserving perishable goods into practice if the country is to make the most out of the agricultural sector. We should also not forget that the agricultural sector was the main stay of the Nigerian economy in the early 60’s before the discovery of oil and up till now, the sector is still begging for help to be revamped and the government has been trying, but major focus still remains on oil.
As the price of crude oil continues to dwindle and many more countries are now discovering oil and modern sources of alternative energy supply, our government should endeavor that all hands is put on deck to revamp the agricultural sector, manufacturing sector, energy sector, and reduction in importation not just to make us have alternative sources of income apart from oil, but to be more efficient in utilizing our natural resources and avoid continuous waste and poverty.
